Nigerian Student wins havard business School Award
Nneka Ezeigwe
According to a statement, published on the school’s official
website, each year they ask students a simple question, taken from the
lines of a poem by Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Mary Oliver. The
question read: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild
and precious life?”
The Guardian reports that Ezeigwe’s response was the best one and she won “The Portrait Project”.
She wrote: “‘Where are you from?’ is a question I struggle to answer. I pause when asked, and finally mumble a response that feels roughly accurate. Truth is: I’m part tourist, part native in many places. I’m frequently described as ‘lucky’ to have been exposed to many enviable experiences globally. I feel lucky, mostly, but a big part of me wishes I had the choice to grow up in the land of my birth (Nigeria), wishes I had the choice to attend high school and university with childhood friends, wishes I had the choice to start my career close to family.
“When you’re from the third world, if you’re lucky, staying home is rarely an option. You migrate to get a world-class education; you stay abroad to find the opportunities that set you up for the career success you desire. You leave loved ones behind, make new friends, lose touch with old ones and feel like a terrible daughter when you don’t make it home in time to call mum before she falls asleep, hours ahead and halfway across the world from you.
“This is why I want to spend my life contributing to the social and economic transformation of Africa. I want to grow companies and build institutions that give our children a true chance to let home be home. I want to see Africa become a destination that can nurture the ambition and success that I’ve travelled so far away to find. And so I am lucky to finally be going home”.
Earlier this year, we reported about a 17-year-old high school senior who also achieved unbelievable success, when he was accepted by eight of the most prestigious universities in the world.
Undoubtedly, bright future is waiting for these talented students.

VC urges SUG members to be servant leaders
Vice-Chancellor of Federal University of Technology

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal
University of Technology Akure, Ondo State, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, has
advised student leaders to endeavour to be servant leaders.
He made the appeal while inaugurating the Students Union Executive of the university.
Daramola, represented by the Deputy Vice
Chancellor, Development, Prof. Tolulope Akinbogun, urged them to see
leadership as a process to influence others to accomplish set out
objectives.
“The underlying principles here are
service, character and teamwork. Do not let your position get into your
heads. You must be humble and approach every situation with maturity.
The character you display during your tenure will show the kind of
persons you are. Strive to serve others, even as you lead,” he said.
The VC also promised that the university would reward the student leaders with local and international trainings.
“We have consistently been sponsoring
student leaders to attend leadership training programmes within and
outside Nigeria for the past six years. I believe your administration
will not be an exception. This is part of our resolve to take FUTA and
its products to a higher level of internationalisation in scholarship
and excellence,” he said.
The Dean, Students’ Affairs, Dr. Kayode Alese, also advised them to give priority to the needs of other students.
“You must represent them and put aside
personal gains. As leaders you must be up and doing. You must be
responsible and exhibit leadership qualities at all times. You must be
able to take decisions in the overall interest of not only the students’
populace but also the entire university community, “he said.
Alese, who restated the open door policy
of the Students Affairs Division, urged the student leaders to always
intimate the university management with their observations and
challenges through his office.
Promising prompt response to their
problems, he warned them against demonstrations and actions that can
disrupt academic activities and elongate their stay on campus.
The SUG President, Fowobaje Oluwaseun, promised that they would ensure a crisis free tenure.
“We shall stand to uphold and uplift the
integrity of the union by rebranding FUTA and ensuring peace and
progress in running the affairs of this great institution.
“Our mission is to build a better union
and to bring back respect to the organisation, to change the perspective
of students about student unionism,” he stated.

Stay away from Nigeria, NANS tells Jacob Zuma
The National Association of Nigerian
Students has advised South African President, Jacob Zuma, to stay away
from the inauguration of the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.
The organisation also threatened to storm
the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, should Zuma step into
the country’s airport.
According to the association, Zuma should
keep off as his visit will be an insult to the sensibility of Nigerians
over his alleged poor handling of the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians
and other migrant foreigners in South Africa.
A statement by NANS President, Tijani
Usman, noted that Zuma’s inability to “apologise to Nigerians like he
did to Mozambique”, despite the sacrifices the country made for South
Africa, was unfortunate.
He said, “We wish to advise the South
African President (Jacob Zuma) to rather stay at home and address
burning issues, rather than embarking on a visit that is the least
desirable.
“The South African President’s failure to
apologise to Nigeria for the losses the country and our citizens
incurred during the xenophobic attacks on foreigners leaves a bitter
taste in the mouth. There is therefore, no point felicitating with a
people who clearly do not matter much to you. President Zuma’s visit
will only amount to pretence.”
NANS further restated its earlier
position that it will henceforth not hesitate to clamp down on South
African investments in the country should any incident of xenophobic
attacks recur.

Nigeria's Ancient Secondary Schools READ MORE: http://www.naij.com/444344-nigerias-ancient-secondary-schools.html
Nigeria has thousands of secondary schools scattered all
over the nook and crannies of the country. But many Nigerians might not
be aware that some of these schools have been in existence even before
their parents were born.
A Nigerian on Nigeria’s biggest online forum, Nairaland, with the moniker, PrinceDebola201 has compiled a list comprising 10 secondary schools that are the oldest in the country.
See them below:
A Nigerian on Nigeria’s biggest online forum, Nairaland, with the moniker, PrinceDebola201 has compiled a list comprising 10 secondary schools that are the oldest in the country.
See them below:
1. CMS Grammar School, Lagos (1859)
2. Methodist Boys High School, Lagos (1878)
3. Methodist Girls High School, Lagos (1879)
4. Baptist Academy, Lagos : 1885
5. Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar, is
established as Nigeria’s first east of the Niger
secondary school in 1895
6. The old Wesley college Elekuro now Wesley
college of science, Ibadan (1905), Methodist Boys’ High School, Oron (1905).
7. Abeokuta Grammar School, Ogun (1908)
8. Kings College , Lagos (1909)
9. Alhuda College, Zaria (1910)
10. Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, Ogun (1913), Eko Boys High School, Lagos (1913).
The schools listed above are very popular in the country as they are controlled by the federal government and have a large population of students and Alma-mater, with some of their associations becoming influential in the country because of the calibre of men and in some cases, women that graduate from the schools.
In those days, students who gain admission into these schools see it as a privilege because they were the best schools in town are were very strict in admitting students. But unfortunately, some of these schools, if not all of them, are living in past glories.
Many of them do not have the same kind of teachers and teaching facilities that made them to be the choice schools back then.
Instead what we have now are expensive, private and well-managed schools, dictating the pace in the Nigerian educational sector while their counterparts owned by and manged by the government are starved of funds.
It is important for the government to pump more funds into these schools to keep them running and enable them compete with the private-owned schools and ultimately bring back the glory days so that they can be the once attractive schools they were in the past.

No fewer than 33 students obtained first
class degrees in the 2013/2014 academic session from the Ladoke Akintola
University of Technology, Ogbomoso, the authorities announced on
Monday.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university,
Prof. Adeniyi Gbadegesin, stated this in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, at a
briefing to herald the institution’s 12th convocation.
According to Gbadegesin, the 33 candidates are part of the 4,697 candidates who will graduate from the university this week.
He added, “A total of 4,697 first degrees
and over 9,000 higher degrees would be awarded during this convocation.
The breakdown is: 33 first class; 1,144 second class upper; 2,575
second class lower; 692 third class; 140 nursing students.”
The VC explained that the convocation
ceremonies starting on April 23 would coincide with the 25th Founder’s
Day ceremony of the university.
He, however, said the ceremonies would
not be elaborate because the university needed money to execute some
other necessary projects.
Gbadegesin, who said graduates of the
school were doing well, pointed to a Computer Science and Engineering
graduate, Mr. Olaolu Ayoola, who recently produced a surveillance drone
he designed during his National Youth Service Corps programme in Osun
State.
The VC, who hailed the support of the
governments of Oyo and Osun states, noted that the university was on the
verge of a major expansion.
He said, “As I speak to you, work is at
an advanced stage at the university’s proposed Institute of Software
Engineering. A Memorandum of Understanding between a leading mechanical
engineering/automobile company, RT Briscoe, and LAUTECH has been signed
to provide hands-on training ground for our students.”

Traders’ daughter emerges Spelling Bee winner
A pupil of Araromi Primary School,
Orile-Agege, Lagos State, Miss Boluwatife Tijani, has emerged winner of
the primary school category of the annual Spelling Bee competition.
Boluwatife, 12, was named the overall
best pupil at the end of a keenly contested competition at the Adeyemi
Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Lagos, on Wednesday. She was rewarded with a
cash prize of N150,000 and a plaque for her efforts.
The contestants, who were drawn from
public primary schools in the six education districts in the state, had
an intriguing time spelling tricky words such as barracuda, casserole,
quarantine, igloo, acapella and others.
At one point, a contestant spelt the world ‘aisle’ as ‘high.’
Before finally bursting into tears,
Boluwatife, whose parents are traders, said, “I feel so happy and
excited. I prepared by reading the dictionary and my teachers also
helped me. I would like to be a medical doctor in the future, but I
don’t know how the money will be spent.”
In her address, Director-General, Office
of Education Assurance, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, said the Spelling Bee
Competition was “conceived to encourage academic excellence.”
She added that the annual programme,
which was initiated in 2001 by a former first lady of the state, Senator
Oluremi Tinubu, through her New Era Foundation, has since been adopted
by the Lagos State Ministry of Education.
“The competition helps pupils to improve
their spelling skills, increase their vocabulary and develop correct
English usage. It also creates good reading habits that will lead to
better academic performance and boost the confidence of the
participants, with a view to preparing them for future endeavours,”
Soyombo said.
According to the Commissioner for
Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, the secondary schools’ category of
the competition, which has produced 14 One-Day Governors, will soon
hold.
She said winners at both primary and secondary school categories would benefit from government education scholarship.
“The success of the winners at the
competition, over the years, has continued to motivate our pupils to
greater heights, as manifested in their achievements in their chosen
careers.
“This is buttressed by the achievements
of past winners who had graduated with distinctions and are now in
enviable professions nationwide,” she said.
Ifaniyi Iretiola, a pupil of the
Methodist Primary School, Ibeshe; and Jonathan Awobodu, a pupil of
Abesan Primary School, Ipaja, emerged second and third position winners
respectively.
They were also rewarded with plaques and cash prizes of N100,000 and N75,000 respectively.

NUT writes Buhari, says education sector needs turn-around
The Nigeria Union of Teachers has
congratulated the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on his victory at
the recent presidential elections.
Describing him as the last hope of the
teachers, the union challenged him to use his mantra of change to
“turn-around the education sector.”
The President of NUT, Mr. Michael Alogba;
and Secretary-General, Mr. Ikpe Obong, said this in a letter to Buhari
and obtained by The PUNCH and ROTHMYTEMMYPress TV on Thursday in Abuja.
The NUT said it was particularly happy
that Buhari would be “coming on board to make a difference in the
governance of our country.
“The fact that you continually profess to
change the circumstances of Nigeria if given the opportunity, gives us
hope that Nigeria is on the verge of rapid development and signals the
beginning of the journey towards an enviable future.
General Muhammadu Buhari President-Elect Federal Republic of Nigeria
“The fact that you continually profess to
change the circumstances of Nigeria if given the opportunity, gives us
hope that Nigeria is on the verge of rapid development and signals the
beginning of the journey towards an enviable future.
“Our dear President-elect, if there is
any sector in Nigeria that needs a drastic change and turn-around, the
education sector is the one, particularly the remuneration, welfare and
status of Nigerian teachers.
“You remain the last hope of the
teachers; for, if you, as a person known for action coupled with your
avowed resolve to ensure equity, justice and fairness to all Nigerians
would fail to raise the status of teachers of Nigeria and that of the
education industry of our country, then no one else will do it.
“In that case, Nigeria would continue to
lag behind and wallow in abject poverty, following the weak foundation
bestowed on it consequent upon the neglect of our education industry.
Herein lies the great challenge of your Presidency and you must not
fail.”

Breaking: Abducted Nigerian Schoolgirls ‘Seen Alive’
More than 50 of the chibok schoolgirls abducted by militant Islamists
in Nigeria last year were seen alive three weeks ago, a woman has told
the BBC.
She saw the girls in the north-eastern Gwoza town before the Boko Haram militants were driven out of there by regional forces.
The Nigerian woman, who lived under Boko Haram’s rule in Gwoza, told the BBC she saw the girls in Islamic attire, being escorted by the militants.
“They said they were Chibok girls kept in a big house,” said the woman, who asked not to be identified for fear of reprisals.
“We just happened to be on the same road with them,” she added.
‘Treated better’
Three other women also told the BBC they had seen the girls in Gwoza.
Boko Haram was believed to have turned Gwoza into its headquarters after it captured the town in August 2014.
Nigeria’s military, backed by troops from neighbouring countries, recaptured the town last month.

I Never Gave Room For Distractions— LASPOTECH Best Graduating Student
Evelyn Nenuwa has emerged as the best graduating student of Lagos
State Polytechnic 2013/2014 academic session in the Higher National
Diploma (HND) programme. She obtained a Grade Point Average (CGPA) of
3.92.
She Graduated from the Department of Science Lab Technology with option in Chemistry.
Following her onerous feat, the Edo State-born Nenuwa got a cash reward for being the best graduating student in her department and also cash prize for emerging the best graduating student of the session by the LASPOTECH administration.
Nenuwa who was actively involved in politics while in school,
explained that she never allowed her post as the Speaker of the National
Association of Technology Students, School of Technology, LASPOTECH
chapter to distact her studies but rather studied more.
Also, the counselling she got from her parents and church leaders, also helped her a great deal. She explains that her father who is an ex-Navy Officer, counselled her to avoid peer pressure, manage her time judiciously and above all, move closer to God.
According to her, achieving such laudable feat is the fruit of lot of sacrifice and self-denial. Nenuwa said she avoided distractions on the campus, including having any romantic relationships with males, attending parties and succumbing to peer pressure to indulge in frivolities.
In her words: “I never gave room for distractions. One, I did not get involved in any amorous affair with the opposite sex. Again, I developed a workable reading time table for myself; and I kept to it. My parents advised me to avoid peer presure but have a strong relationship with God and they provided all I needed to succeed in my academics because they know the importance of education.
“I developed a workable reading time table for myself; and I kept to it. Studying in Lagos State Polytechnic is not an easy thing if truly one wants to come out with high grade because there are series of assignments to battle with and you have to be in class before 8am and all the students live off campus. I did not joke with my studies, I always made use of the school library even on weekends since I could not study at home because the environment is noisy and not conducive for studying.”
Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola urged the graduands of the institution to be confident and create job opportunities, not only for themselves but for others too.
Fashola who was represented by his Special Adviser on Education, Chief Fatai Olukoga stressed further that the Polytechic has impacted on students what will make them stand on their own during their stay in the institution.
He said: “The unemployment rate in Nigeria is quite high with a great pointer to half of the youth population being unemployed, yet, thousands more graduate from our tertiary institutions every year widening the figure. We want our students to leave school as well rounded people that will be able to stand on their own, able not only to work but create job for others.
“However, for decades, the mentality of Nigeria has been go to school, get good grades and get a job when you graduate, instead preaching to our children to aspire to create jobs from all indications.”

2015 Cowbell Mathematics Competition: 50,000 Students Participate in First Stage
About 50,000 junior and senior secondary school students in Nigeria sat
for the first stage examination of the 2015 Cowbell National Secondary
School Mathematics Competition (NASSMAC) last Saturday in 184
examination centres.
Category Manager of Promasidor Nigeria Limited (sponsor of the competition), Mr. Abiodun Ayodeji who made this disclosure, said that the urge to develop the students’ interest in mathematics is the reason for establishing the competition.
He expressed concerns about the mass failure recorded by students in the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) organised public examinations in the country.
Ayodeji added that he was impressed by the competition’s ability to spur the interest of secondary school students in mathematics in Nigeria as Promasidor records yearly increase in the number of participants in the competition.
The manager stated that Cowbell had included a radio programme in 15 stations around the country in order to add value to the competition.

Chapter One
It was early in the morning and
still dark when
Jimi Solade woke up to someone
shaking him
roughly. He groaned and
mumbled to himself, half
asleep.
'Jimi!' He jerked fully awake at
the sound of that
familiar voice, it was is his
brother.
'Wole!' Jimi said in surprise.
'Yes , it's me' and his brother
smiled in a way
that showed only his upper
teeth.
'Man! What…?' Jimi began. They
stared at each
other, delighted.
'No greeting , little bro?' Wole
smiled again.
'Sorry, but does anyone know
you're here? Does
Daddy…?' Jimi did not complete
the sentence;
instead he embraced his brother
tightly,'I've
missed you!'
Wole was thinner. Jimi could feel
it.
'Mum knows I'm here," Wole
said. He too did not
mention their father. Just then,
the alarm clock
sounded. It was time for Jimi to
get up, and he
released his brother.
'Go on, get ready for school,'
Wole said,
stretching on the bed. 'At least
you seem happy
to see me.' He looked round the
room at the
carelessly flung shirts, jeans and
boxer shorts
over the chair, to the poster of
the Manchester
United football team on the wall
above Jimi's
bed. A typical boy's room.
Another worn-out
poster of Tupac Shakur was
pasted on the
opposite wall.
'I didn't remove it even though
it's an eyesore,'
Jimi said, grinning. 'Everything's
is just as you
left it.'
Wole squeezed Jimi's arm lightly.
He picked up
something on the bedside table
beside Jimi's
music CDs, chemistry and
mathematics
textbooks. 'Man, this is some
watch. Must have
cost a mountain. You always get
all the nicest
things, why…?'
'Wole, don't touch my watch.'
'What's your problem? Can't look
at a watch?'
'I'm sorry bro,' Jimi muttered.
'I'm glad to see
you back – really – but,, you
know…'
'My cute, spoiled little brother…
You grow taller
every time I see you.' Wole got
up walked
towards the door. 'Don't worry
about the old
bear. Better get ready for
school. Er- I took some
cash from your drawers, hope
you don't mind.
Sighing, Jimi plodded to the
bathroom. Trust his
brother to always collect things,
but he was
happy he was back. It was a
new day and the
beginning of his final school
year. Like his
brother, he was as tall and long-
limbed as an
athlete, though, unlike his
brother, he had dimples
when he smiled. He was sixteen
years old and he
was already sprouting a beard.
He flexed his right
arm noting that he had
developed muscles. Good.
He whistled as he took his
shower, refusing to
think about the morning's
surprise. The reason
why was long story; too long to
think about on a
brand new day.

shaking him
roughly. He groaned and
mumbled to himself, half
asleep.
'Jimi!' He jerked fully awake at
the sound of that
familiar voice, it was is his
brother.
'Wole!' Jimi said in surprise.
'Yes , it's me' and his brother
smiled in a way
that showed only his upper
teeth.
'Man! What…?' Jimi began. They
stared at each
other, delighted.
'No greeting , little bro?' Wole
smiled again.
'Sorry, but does anyone know
you're here? Does
Daddy…?' Jimi did not complete
the sentence;
instead he embraced his brother
tightly,'I've
missed you!'
Wole was thinner. Jimi could feel
it.
'Mum knows I'm here," Wole
said. He too did not
mention their father. Just then,
the alarm clock
sounded. It was time for Jimi to
get up, and he
released his brother.
'Go on, get ready for school,'
Wole said,
stretching on the bed. 'At least
you seem happy
to see me.' He looked round the
room at the
carelessly flung shirts, jeans and
boxer shorts
over the chair, to the poster of
the Manchester
United football team on the wall
above Jimi's
bed. A typical boy's room.
Another worn-out
poster of Tupac Shakur was
pasted on the
opposite wall.
'I didn't remove it even though
it's an eyesore,'
Jimi said, grinning. 'Everything's
is just as you
left it.'
Wole squeezed Jimi's arm lightly.
He picked up
something on the bedside table
beside Jimi's
music CDs, chemistry and
mathematics
textbooks. 'Man, this is some
watch. Must have
cost a mountain. You always get
all the nicest
things, why…?'
'Wole, don't touch my watch.'
'What's your problem? Can't look
at a watch?'
'I'm sorry bro,' Jimi muttered.
'I'm glad to see
you back – really – but,, you
know…'
'My cute, spoiled little brother…
You grow taller
every time I see you.' Wole got
up walked
towards the door. 'Don't worry
about the old
bear. Better get ready for
school. Er- I took some
cash from your drawers, hope
you don't mind.
Sighing, Jimi plodded to the
bathroom. Trust his
brother to always collect things,
but he was
happy he was back. It was a
new day and the
beginning of his final school
year. Like his
brother, he was as tall and long-
limbed as an
athlete, though, unlike his
brother, he had dimples
when he smiled. He was sixteen
years old and he
was already sprouting a beard.
He flexed his right
arm noting that he had
developed muscles. Good.
He whistled as he took his
shower, refusing to
think about the morning's
surprise. The reason
why was long story; too long to
think about on a
brand new day.
OVERALL SUMMARY
"The Last Days at Forcados High
School" by A.H.
Mohammed tells the story of
Jimi Solade, the
most popular boy at the elite
Forcados High
School.
As he begins his final year in
senior secondary
together with his friends, the
sweet-hearted and
devout Nene and Ansa, the
nerdy art genius, he's
determined it's going to be his
best year yet.
But Jimi's rogue brother, Wole, is
back – which
means trouble can't be far
behind.
Then there's Efua, the beautiful
and mysterious
new girl in class who seems to
have no time for
boys – including Jimi. But when
Jimi's mother
falls ill, he realizes that things are
about to change
- and not
necessarily in a good way.
A funny and honest book about
self-discovery,
family, friendship, tolerance and
the highs and
lows of life as a modern
Nigerian teenager. Told in
straightforward
language, A.H. Mohammed never
talks down to
readers.
Instead, Last Days stands out
with its realistic
situations, original characters
and deft storytelling.
It is at once entertaining and
deadly serious,
tackling a range of difficult
issues including drug
abuse, discrimination and loss,
with intelligence
